Guard/Security Officer

Position Summary
The guard/security officer performs security and watchman duties by patrolling, observing, and maintaining watch over assigned facilities, equipment, materials, and supplies; inspecting, examining, and checking locks, doors, windows, enclosures, fences, and gates to ensure that they are secure; guarding against theft, vandalism, fire, illegal entry or use of equipment and facilities; detecting and responding to illegal and questionable activities; and detecting and reporting deficiencies.

The guard/security officer operates communication equipment to report emergencies, vandalism, irregular or unauthorized activities, and serious violations and threats to the security of the assigned area; admits authorized workers into building/facilities after working hours; maintains keys, equipment, facilities, materials and supplies; may be required to prepare and submit reports; and observes safety regulations.

The guard/security officer answers telephone calls and guides/greets visitors, answering questions and providing information pertaining to assigned facilities.

Essential Job Functions

The guard/security officerPatrols offices, buildings, and grounds to prevent theft or damage to property, equipment, tools, and supplies.
Patrols a prescribed area on an installation to check the status of locks, alarms, fences, gates, or other barriers.
Patrols installation perimeters to detect faulty fences and/or detection equipment, trespassing violations, and attempted thefts.
Controls personnel access by monitoring the identification of individuals entering controlled areas.
Refers persons who lack proper credentials to a control point to arrange access.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Prepares a report of daily activities.
Calls appropriate person in accordance with established procedure for work that requires prompt attention.
Investigates vandalism and may detain suspects until police respond.
Controls vehicles traffic on site.

Essential Job Requirements
Education and Vocation

Must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically. Must possess valid state-issued operator's license.


Physical Requirements

This position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, and speaking.

The U.S. Dept. of Labor classifies this job as light work, exerting 10 to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions

Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. May be required to work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. Work is performed in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to electrical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts. May be subject to very dramatic temperature changes such as when entering or exiting a tank. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons.
