Ukraine Defence and Security Advisor (UKR22.623) - Internal Only
Job Description
(Roles and Responsibilities)
This is a fantastic role leading on the defence and security sectors for the Department for International Trade (DIT) team at the British Embassy in Kyiv. Supporting Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity and independence has been a longstanding priority for the UK government. The devastating conflict that began with Russia’s invasion on 24th February 2022 has seen an increase in Ukraine’s requirements to defend itself and its population; and a corresponding need for even sharper support from the UK and other international partners. The outcome will be central to regional security and stability across the region, and will have wider implications for the international rules based system..
DIT will play an important role in contributing to Ukraine’s security and ability to defend itself - by identifying and working with UK companies who can help meet Ukraine’s needs. This will be a busy and rewarding role, working closely with the Ukrainian government to define their requirements, and helping to coordinate resource and expertise in the UK’s defence and security sectors to meet them. The Trade Development Advisor will be responsible for developing and implementing a programme of activities to maximise British exports in the defence & security sectors. You will work closely with our Defence Attaché and their team, UK Export Finance and Defence and Security Exports in the UK; the UK defence industry, and the Ukrainian Ministries of Defence and Interior.
The ideal candidate will be highly collaborative and flexible and, importantly, focussed on delivering results. You will be an effective leader able to set clear strategic direction. You will also need to be energetic, a self-starter, able to manage yourself and the demands on you, and identify where you should best spend your time to deliver the most value to the role. You will also have strong interpersonal skills, be a clear and confident communicator, and can engage at senior levels across business and Government.
Key responsibilities include:
This is an important, and high-profile role. We will expect the successful candidate to continue DIT’s ongoing work to provide a pipeline of Defence / Security sales in Ukraine, and so the ability to innovate and drive-forward work is essential. The ability to consider facts on the ground, and turn that into insightful analysis will also be essential. The successful candidate will also need to be flexible and willing to turn their hand to any activity that HMG undertakes in the defence and security sectors in Ukraine.
