Background: 

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions.

Position Purpose:

The position is part of XB budget resources to support humanitarian operations in Northern Ethiopia. Within limits of delegated authority, and under the general supervision of the Chief Security Adviser Senior, the Security Information Analyst (SIA) at P-3 level is responsible for the management of information relevant to security, including collection, collation, analysis and dissemination, to be used as a decision-making and planning tool by the UN Designated Official and Security Management Team in a field mission to enhance the safety and security of UN personnel, assets and operation.

The SIA will maintain security information awareness of all aspects which could potentially affect the safety and security of the UN, including up-to-date knowledge of events relating to the security environment through monitoring of security incidents, daily situation reports, local media and other open sources, and the cultivation of an information gathering and sharing network in accordance with policy and guidelines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Contributes to the provision of advice to the Chief Security Adviser or a similar entity on threats affecting the United Nations:Evaluates and coordinates security information requirements, acquisition, collation and dissemination of security threat information to the CSA or equivalent, Designated Officials and Security Management Teams.
Analyzes security information, identifies trends of threats and security incidents affecting United Nations system personnel, assets and operations in specific countries.

Assists Senior Officers, CSA or equivalent in the development of specific security risk assessments for individual UN programmes and activities in countries and region:Preparation of rapid threat and risk assessments;

Provides country-wide security risk analysis, briefing materials and presentations to CSA or equivalent, Designated Officials and Security Management Teams on security matters:Contributes to the development of threat assessments in coordination with the Chief Security Adviser.

Maintains effective communication channels with security authorities of host countries and other interlocutors:Responsible for the management of information relevant to security, including collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination, to be used as a decision-making and planning tool by the UN Designated Official (DOs) and Security Management Teams (SMT).
Collaboration between the UN Security Management System (UNSMS), International Non-governmental Organisations (INGOs) and International Organisations (IOs);

Drafts reports on analyses of security incidents affecting United Nations system personnel, assets, and operations:Conducts trend analysis, gathers comprehensive information on all factors of insecurity, assesses the relevance and validity of security information and the reliability of information resources.

RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in political, military, or international relations or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

At least five years of progressively responsible experience in applied military, police, or political predictive analysis is required.
At least two years of international experience in a multilateral organization in the field of criminology or corporate security is required.
Experience in the analysis of either security, crime, political, or military trends is desirable.
Experience in information or intelligence analysis is desirable.
Experience in the preparation of analytical statistical reports is desirable.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in oral and written English is required
