This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team for Accountability of Da'esh / ISIL (UNITAD) and will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. The Close Protection Officer reports to the Close Protection Coordination Officer.

UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da'esh) in Iraq.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Close Protection Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Conducts and coordinates personal protection operations for the designated official when on duty.
• Remains within the proximity of the principal at all times.
• Remains vigilant and alert in case of any threat to the protected person and acts accordingly.
• Conducts all personal protection security operations as outlined in the UN personal protection management guidelines.
• Coordinates all activities with relevant parties to include the Security Operations Unit and other appropriate security organisations, as required.
• Whenever necessary, supervises drivers attached to the Close Protection Unit in the performance of their assigned duties.
• Operates all personal protection equipment and ensures equipment readiness.
• Carries all issued equipment while on duty.
• Conducts training sessions on personal protection subjects.
• Assists in the preparation of close protection operational documentations.
• Performs other duties, as assigned.

Education

High School diploma or an equivalent diploma is required. Technical training in military or police procedures as well as training in close protection, self-defense and security techniques is required. UNDSS Close Protection Officer Certificate (CPOC) is desirable (and will be expected for future advancement in this field). Proficiency in the use of personal protection weapons, communications/surveillance equipment and close protection transportation is also required.

Work Experience

At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in close protection with a local, national, private or international security organization is required. Experience in a UN peacekeeping environment – or similar international organization or non- governmental organization – in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable. Experience and exposure at the international level in a conflict or a post conflict environment and working within a diversified team composition is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in Arabic is desirable.

Assessment

Previously rostered candidates are not subject to any further assessment and as such, will not be invited for such an assessment.

Special Notice

This position is being advertised for advanced planning purposes, pending approval of the relevant funding and staffing structures. The position will be available as of 1 January 2019.

The appointment may be curtailed, or the post level adjusted, in accordance with the Staff Rules, for such reasons as abolition of post or reduction of staff or committee funding approvals, including the non-approval of the funding or the non-extension of the mission mandate.
