Position Summary:
The Chief Security Officer reports to the Staff Captain and is responsible for implementing the Island's Security Plan and policies as stated in the Security Manual of SQM and the Guest Conduct Policy. The Chief Security Officer must develop and implement procedures to ensure security obligations and policies are fulfilled; and are expected to contribute to the Global Security Department’s continuous improvement efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean
International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies. Each Island employee may be required to perform all functions in various service venues and throughout the Island.
In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of Anchored in Excellence, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow Island employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and crew areas.
The Chief Security Officer directly reports to the Staff Captain and coordinates Hotel Security activities closely with the Hotel Director.
The Chief Security Officer is responsible for managing all Island security operations and for following and implementing security policies and guidance provided by the shore-side Global Security Department.
The Chief Security Officer must also have an understanding of the Safety and Quality Management Program including his responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill; and an excellent understanding of Master's Rules and Regulations and Company Policies.
The Chief Security Officer will work a regularly assigned schedule and is expected to otherwise be on-call for situations that may require his assistance.
The Chief Security Officer is responsible for: Ensuring both the Island’s access AND guest security functions are successfully met; properly scheduling work and watch hours for security personnel to meet security obligations; maintaining all security equipment; preparing all required security documentation and reports; administering the Island’s key system; conducting security inspections of crew quarters; fulfilling the security training needs of all Island’s personnel; attending training activities as required; and ensuring that AMOS records are properly maintained.
The Chief Security Officer must maintain close communication with the Staff Captain and work closely with the Global Security Department to continuously improve fleet security.
The Chief Security Officer is expected to follow RCL policies that require the immediate notification of Miami personnel of all criminal allegations involving crew or guests.
When directed, the Chief Security Officer shall assist other Island officers in firefighting and lifesaving activities and training; and will be involved in the implementation and improvement of the accident prevention and environmental protection programs in cooperation with the Chief Officer Safety and the Environmental Officer.
In cooperation with other department heads/Group Leaders and supervisors, the Chief Security Officer shall arrange for training related to general crew security awareness, alcohol and drug abuse.
Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required.
Performs related duties as required. This position description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the Island employee occupying this position. Island employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management.
Qualifications:
A Chief Security Officer is expected to be a highly skilled manager with security experience and a demonstrated understanding of how to successfully direct a dynamic security operation in a leisure environment.
The Chief Security Officer should possess excellent leadership ability, organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
Candidates are required to have five (5) years’ experience in at least one of the following areas; Army/Maritime/Aviation/Police or Hotel Security environment, with the ability to function in a multicultural corporate environment.
The Chief Security Officer should have education/experience in counter terrorism and physical security which includes:
Access control including anti-terrorist countermeasures, security screening methods and equipment operation (x-ray, metal detector, explosives/narcotics detection)
Interpersonal skills that include strong communication and conflict resolution abilities
Incident command, including first responder, scene and evidence preservation, investigation, interview and documentation
Appropriate enforcement skills, including appropriate detention and physical search procedures
Procedural knowledge, including familiarity with security-related civil and criminal law
The Chief Security Officer is also expected to demonstrate a high level of skill in protecting assets; crisis and emergency management, planning and response; contingency planning and the capability to organize investigations.
Managerial and organizational skills combined with literacy and knowledge of computers is very important for this position.
The Chief Security Officer is expected to follow RCL policies that require the immediate notification of the CSO and Miami personnel of all situations which have caused or may cause a lessening of port security; in as much as any lessening of port security could impact future port calls by other RCL ships and ships of other cruise lines.
The Chief Security Officer must maintain a thorough understanding of the ISPS code, Security Manual of SQM, his Island’s Security Plan and Port Facility Security Plans at his ports of call.
Language Requirements:
Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German or any other language is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the Island employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
All Island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills.
Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
