Safety, Security and Resilience Senior Advisor

This is a new role for an experienced safety and security professional to join the BBC Safety, Security and Resilience team. We are looking for a safety and security advisor with excellent spoken and written English language skills. The role will be based in Nairobi and operate across Africa where required.

Role Responsibility

The role is to provide safety and security support to News teams across Africa. You will carry out office/building inspections, safety audits, deliver the BBC safety and security training and provide safety and security advice/guidance and support to operational teams.
Carry out regular safety and security inspections and audits of BBC offices and sites in the region.
Carry out regular personal and physical security/safety risk assessments as needed in the region.
Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses
Maintain records of all safety and security risk assessments and produce reports that make clear recommendations for improvements
Work with regional management to develop safety and security action plans in line with corporate objectives.
Develop policies and standard operating procedures for safety and security in line with corporate requirements and relevant local/national legislation.
Provide advice about relevant safety/security topics such as vehicle safety, fire safety, noise, travel health, building security.
Take the lead as a regional security advisor for security-related incidents throughout the region
Deploy (sometimes at short notice) to countries within Africa to support BBC Newsgathering teams with breaking news stories – acting as the safety and security advisor for these deployed teams
Take the lead and deliver for bespoke, in-house training with BBC managers and employees about health, safety and security to mitigate the risks associated with working in the Region
Advise and support management for bespoke projects throughout the region

Are you the right candidate?

You will have a NEBOSH Diploma and IOSH registration, and relevant security experience. You will have experience of delivering H&S training, the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff/management and be able to suggest practical solutions to potential problems. You will have significant experience of working across Africa and be able to travel extensively. An interest in overseas operations will be vital, as is the ability to find pragmatic ways of ensuring compliance with local legislation in extensive countries around the world. Media/ Broadcast related experience is desirable.
You will be able to produce written and verbal reports, analyse safety and security data and deliver briefings to a range of staff groups.
Security experience - law enforcement and/or military service preferred
Excellent written and spoken communication skills in order to explain health and safety processes to a range of people and to give presentations to groups – Fluent Kenyan and English language speaker (and written); French language skills (spoken and written) are also desirable
Negotiating skills to convince managers of the need to implement and maintain safety standards that may compromise speed or efficiency in the organisation
Patience and diplomacy and the vision to execute a collaborative approach to health, safety and security issues
The ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately
Demonstrable IT skills
A flexible approach to work including attention to detail and an investigative mind
An interest in current affairs and international relations
Demonstrable experience of managing health, safety and security risk in the African Region
Medical qualifications are desirable (FREC 3, First Aid at Work)
Valid permits to reside and work in Kenya

Location: Nairobi

Contract: Fixed Term - 24 months
