Role synopsis
BP’s global Safety & Operational Risk (S&OR) function interfaces with each segment and business in the Group’s portfolio. The purpose of S&OR is to drive safe, compliant and reliable operations across the company.
This Regional Security Advisor (RSA) role sits within the Intelligence, Security, Crisis & Continuity Management arm of S&OR and is responsible for the UK, Western Europe and Scandinavia region.
As security Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the region, the RSAis primarily accountable for providing Functional excellence in assuring, planning, developing, implementing and monitoring global and regional security strategies for multi-year programmes designed to protect assets (people, property, information, operational capability and reputation) against risk of injury, loss or damage from criminal, hostile or malicious acts across multiple business streams. This role provides an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to BP’s Security operations and interacts directly with senior business leaders in region and at Group level, providing an independent view of risk, key insights, advice and practical solutions. The RSA is a valued member of local and regional leadership teams and the Group ISC centre of expertise.

Mentor, support and guide others in the Line security function and ISC as a Senior Level Leader in BP.

Key accountabilities
Provide an Independent view on threat and risk and subject matter advice and guidance to the business.
Provide Assurance (Planned, Structured and Day to Day) to businesses that security is being delivered and Self-Verified by the business to mitigate assessed risk and make recommendations where necessary to strengthen barriers.
Advise Businesses on the management of Security in line with Group Guides, Practices and Policies.
Work with multiple businesses to ensure legal compliance with Government and/or internal protocols.
Assist in the delivery of security awareness programmes and provide Functional expertise and mentorship to the Business Security departments or directly to the businesses as required.
Ensure that appropriate security awareness training needs are identified and the relevant training delivered across multiple business streams.
Train, develop and mentor Business Security Managers and Representatives.
Provide leadership in a specialist area, operating with general direction only, proposing changes in practice where necessary.
With the S&OR ISC Intelligence Analysis Unit (IAU), support the production of regional and area specific Threat Assessments involving significant liaison with external agencies including the Police, Military and other government and law enforcement agencies, to identify current and emerging risks, and provide tailored and fit-for-purpose advice to the business.
Contribute to ISC Leadership Team and businesses in the development and delivery of Group wide Security solutions to ensure risk reductions against a wide range of threats.
Network with those responsible for security across the Group on key issues, and share best practices. Liaise with Digital Security and Risk (DS&R), Internal Audit, HSE, Legal, HR and other BP functions on areas of shared risk.
Provide advice and guidance in respect of the appropriateness and strength of barriers designed to control or mitigate risk.
Provide advice and support to management in the event of a security emergency and volatile periods such as civil unrest, terrorist attacks and kidnap. Provide pre-emptive advice on risk reduction strategies for predicted periods of concern or during major events that could disrupt business.
Provide security advice to all BP Major Capital Projects in the region and to planned operations or joint ventures (JV’s). This advice could be the basis for either continuance or withdrawal from such projects often involving significant financial consequences.
Provide counsel and support to the businesses in the implementation of the Voluntary Principles of Security and Human Rights.
Provide advice, guidance and support for all major events across the region, contributing directly to business leadership discussions.Key Challenges
Managing the balance between delivery of an adequate and sustainable level of security solutions against continually changing operational and commercial constraints.
Understanding how physical security influences and promotes effective cyber protections across the full range of business activities.
Providing a comprehensive service which identifies threats, risks, conducts security risk management reviews and undertakes complex investigations.
Leveraging strong relationships with external government & law enforcement agencies as well as Commercial Security colleagues.
Building strong relationships and working effectively with multiple stakeholders across different cultures; demonstrating awareness of the broader impact of actions on colleagues, community, and environment.
Interacting and communicating effectively with senior management, business clients, colleagues and external parties.
Operating effectively with minimal direction to deliver specialist expertise.
Essential Education
Degree or equivalent experience in a security related discipline
Candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English. An ability to converse in one of the regional languages would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Essential experience and job requirements
Previous experience in a leadership position within the Police, Military, Security Services, or other law enforcement agencies, or as a professional security manager with commercial experience.
Significant experience of providing security expertise to senior business leaders and internationally dispersed multi-discipline teams.
Strong and proven working knowledge and direct experience of physical security methodologies and risk assessment practises.
Strong track record of interacting and communicating effectively with senior management, business clients, colleagues and external parties.
Maintain and enhance relationships within the BP world-wide security network, other functions, business segments, law enforcement and government bodies.
The candidate should demonstrate dynamism and energy together with strong communication and interpersonal skills; as the role will be vital to not only the public face of the company but also internally. The Regional Security Advisor position is a lead coaching, guiding, mentoring and persuading role, with interface at all levels of the organisation including senior executives.
