Employer: British Embassy Algiers
Location: Algiers , Algeria
Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy in Algiers is looking for an energetic and motivated self starter, to take on this varied and interesting role. We are expanding our Counter Terrorism and Counter Extremism network overseas, which re-emphasised the importance of HMG’s Counter Terrorism work. This new position is part of the new global Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network (CTEN). You will be working with a range of colleagues from different departments.
The job holder will build strong working relationships with the Algerian government working on counter-terrorism and counter extremism, and related security issues.
Duties and responsibilities:
Build strong relationships with the Algerian government.
Use these relationships to work in partnership with colleagues in other departments in relation to Counter-Terrorism activity across all four pillars of the CONTEST strategy
Provide high-quality analysis and reporting to Embassy colleagues and London stakeholders on developments within the security system to identify opportunities for effective bilateral cooperation, influencing and delivering results against the CT/CE objectives.
Provide strategic awareness and support for the Embassy Programming team, ensuring coherence between the teams.
As part of the broader Embassy team, contribute to wider corporate activity.
The jobholder will be expected to provide support and help to maintain the Embassy’s network of contacts on Counter Terrorism/Counter Violent Extremism issues, including Ministers, senior officials, military, law enforcement colleagues and civil society. The ability to liaise smoothly and effectively and report important information accurately to Embassy colleagues and London stakeholders is key to the success of this role.
The job holder will need to provide support and assistance to help leverage this network of contacts to deliver results against HMG strategies. You will need to track developments within the Algerian Counter Terrorism system, identify influencing factors in the Algerian decision-making process, and seek opportunities for the UK to push our key messages in support of operational activity.
The jobholder will be expected to work effectively as part of a team, adopting a collaborative approach with colleagues to ensure that activity is aligned and effective. You will work alongside colleagues from a range of government departments, many of whom have wider security as part of their portfolio. While part of the new CTEN hub in Algiers, the jobholder will work closely with the Embassy Programmes Team and Senior Management in delivering progress towards the Embassy’s goals.
This is a job for a self-starter who has the energy and drive to help develop the Embassy’s network of contacts and deliver results. But you’ll also need to be adaptable, and ready to react to changing priorities, liaising confidently across a broad range of sometimes technical issues. It will be an opportunity to demonstrate how you balance the need to respond to tight deadlines with the need to make space for forward-looking analytical work, whilst delivering in a high-profile and complex policy area.
Key Competencies:
Leading and Communicating - At all levels, effectiveness in this area is about showing our pride and passion for public service, leading from the front and communicating with clarity, conviction, integrity and enthusiasm. Collaborating and Partnering – People skilled in this area are team players who create and maintain positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of people within and outside the Civil Service to help get business done.
Engaging Internationally - Effectiveness in this area is about leading internationally, engaging our staff, contacts and international partners to help deliver UK Government objectives, while living the Civil Service values and serving the UK public.
