This position will be located in the Support Office of the Organisation for the Prohibitions of Chemical Weapons-United Nations Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM), established by Security Council resolution 2235 (2015) and renewed through resolution 2319 (2016). The position will be based in The Hague. The Security coordination military analyst reports to the senior analyst - analysis and corroboration.Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Military Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:

• Produces military analysis, advice and corroboration relevant to the JIM investigation to the Leadership Panel and investigators;
• Examines and analyses material relevant for the JIM investigation from a military perspective and prepares plausible scenarios to explain the rationale behind the use of chemicals as weapons;
• The Military Analyst provides analysis on the relevant military background in the context of political, administrative and security aspects of the conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, with special reference to the cases being investigated by the JIM. The Military Analyst participates actively in the investigative work of the JIM;
• Contributes to the preparation of reports to the Security Council;
• Prepares briefing notes, speeches and talking points as required;
• Contributes to the operating procedures and guidelines of the JIM in the areas of competence, including, but not limited to, how military analysis feeds into an international criminal investigation on the use of chemicals as weapon;
•Performs other related duties as required.Competencies

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in social/political science, military science, international security, law or related field. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in security, such as national security or military science is required; of which, at least three years of military related analysis is required. Experience in the field in the United Nations or similar organization is desirable.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
