Job Description
The Security Force Assistance (SFA) Advisor is a subject matter expert (SME) in the theory,
doctrine, and practice of SFA operations.
The position serves on a COMISAF Advisory and Assistant Team (CAAT) Regional Command (RC) Team located in Herat, Afghanistan, providing subject matter expertise to the Senior SFA Advisor to support CAAT HQ.
Anticipated
work is 180-day duty tours (maximum 16 days absence allowed), with 8 hours a day, 7 days a
week working shifts to meet the CAAT Battle Rhythm, mission requirements, and assignment
deadlines.
Responsibilities:
Provide SFA SME support to CAAT headquarters, RC Teams and supported units.
Monitor, assess and report to CAAT HQs and RC teams on the SFA performance of
personnel and organizations in theater.
Develop and propose testing, fielding and implementation of SFA solutions including
(but not limited to) new tactics, equipment, technology, training, doctrine and concepts,
in support of CAAT RC Teams and supported units.
Provide SFA field advice and assistance as needed to RC headquarters and tactical units
to improve operational performance.
Collect, refine,disseminate, monitor and assess SFA best practices in theater.
Maintain continuous communications with the RC CAAT Team Leader and report on
their location, activities, well-being and operational needs.
Other tasks as directed by CAAT headquarters or RC Team leaders.
Perform other duties as required.
Education / Skills and Requirements:
BA/BS in a strategic analysis or SFA-
related field (e.g. security studies, conflict studies,international relations, management,
operations research, terrorism studies)
Previous operational experience in counterinsurgency campaigns
10 years’ work experience in counterinsurgency-related fields
1 year’s recent (within last 3 years) experience in the OEF campaign
Superior written and verbal communication
SECRET clearance
Preferred Experience / Skills:
Master’s Degree in related field
10 years operational experience in COIN-related fields in Afghanistan
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with employees, customers, andadministration personnel. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functionsof finger dexterity, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling,talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitivemotion. Requires ability to constantly lift large and heavy objects and boxes and to repeatedly load and unload large objects throughout the shift. Musthave ability to safely lift 50lbs. without assistance and to push and pull up to 150 lbs. withappropriate equipment. Requires significant demands on these physical requirements throughoutentire work shift and requires tasks to be performed in all types of weather conditions.Theworker is also required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles orheavy equipment. Theworker is subject to extreme heat and extreme cold: Temperatures above 100 degrees or below32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect ofother environmental conditions such as wind, humidity, rain, snow, etc.
