Serco has operated HMP Kilmarnock since 1999 under a 25 year contract on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service (SPS). It is one of the most modern prisons in Scotland, specifically designed for efficiency, with 500 single cells and a maximum capacity of 692 prisoners.
The role of Dog Handler is pivotal in the facilitation of dedicated searching and other key security related procedures being maintained in accordance with the Contract, Security Manual, Security Standards and Director`s Rules.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:
Safely manage a fully trained drug detection dog
Routine Front End Security procedures
Random & routine searches of prisoners, visitors, staff, vehicles and areas
Intelligence directed searches
Daily perimeter checks
Searching/screening of incoming mail
Data input and collation of stats
Support and assist other security staff functions
And any other duties required
In addition you will be responsible for ensuring that the drug dog is well groomed and in good condition by:
Ensuring that necessary veterinary care is provided, including periodic examinations and inoculations
Provide for the safety of the dog, including actions to prevent poisoning and any other actions that would bring harm to the dog
Ensure that the dog has access to food and water and that adequate shelter is provided
Maintain the well-being and general health of the dog
Maintaining dog training and relicensing as required
Essential skills
The successful applicant will have experience in dog handling. Must be able to display professional standards of interpersonal skills, have the ability to work well within a team and on their own initiative, together with demonstrating a good overall understanding of security and situational awareness.
PCO Certification and Dog Handler experience would be advantageous.
Either hold or be able to attain security clearance to SC level.
