Responsibilities
This Generic Job Opening has been advertised to attract applications from qualified candidates, including serving staff in various Security or related functions that are part of the same job family, such as Fire Safety Assistant, Investigator, Pass and Identification Assistant, Personal Protection Officer, Radio Operator, Security Officer, etc. Within limits of delegated authority and depending on location, the Security Officer FS-4 will carry out the following duties (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Security Officers FS-4): • Control the opening, closure and entry into buildings to ensure security of the mission premises and issue building passes as appropriate. • Manage all aspects of the administration and work of
security guards and watchmen. • Ensure that routine patrols and/or sector patrols are conducted to check security of buildings, personnel, equipment and adherence to rules and regulations. • Receive, record and appropriately action information received through all communication means. • Monitor and control communications network to ensure security and discipline. • Monitor adherence to computer and information security guidelines. • Work closely with the mission IT section to ensure the implementation and maintenance of all technically related matters that are necessary for a secure IT network environment. • Investigate IT security breaches in conjunction with the IT section. • Conduct security surveys of offices and other mission facilities. • Obtain comprehensive security information and produce background papers relating to incidents that affect safety and security in the mission • Instruct personnel in the performance of security services, including fire control and physical security of the premises, first aid procedures, use of equipment and operation of automated alarm and video surveillance system. • Conduct investigations as directed and prepare comprehensive reports on accidents and incidents involving UN personnel, installations and equipment. • Liaise where necessary with designated host government security, safety and emergency officials. • Liaise and exchange security related information with all components of the mission and other UN agencies in the area. • Conduct threat assessments and site surveys • Prepare and provide security briefings, written security advice and recommendations to the mission hierarchy. • Produce incident based security and travel advisories. • Prepare quarterly and other routine security reports for DPKO and UNSECOORD.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
High school or equivalent diploma is required A valid driver’s license is a requirement.

Work Experience
At least 6 years of progressively responsible security experience with a local, national or private police, security or fire brigade organization. Training in military or police procedures and practices, and self-defense techniques is required. Training in martial arts and/or specialized security practices would be an asset. Experience in a UN Peacekeeping or Special Political Affairs Mission is highly desirable.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English and/or French is required; knowledge of a second UN language is an advantage and sometimes a requirement. Fluency in the local language may be essential.
