Where you fit in

The Maritime Security Team is responsible for controlling Maritime Security Risks to ALARP and delivering assurance to all downstream maritime assets involved in the transportation of Shell cargo on the water. Additionally, it supports maritime transport of Upstream and Project assets in designated Maritime Security Zones (MSZ). The Team operates globally with representation in UK and Singapore. It uses threat assessments provided by Corporate Security to develop risk mitigation measures within the identified MSZ, including Indian Ocean, Asia-Pacific and West Africa. The Team also monitors maritime security threats and risks, and collaborates with Corporate Security in assessing emerging, developing, or existing risks including waterborne activism and establishes new Shell specific MSZ as required.

The position will report to the Manager Maritime Security & ER and will day to day take direction from the Global Maritime Security Team Lead.

What’s the role?

The role of the Maritime Security Assessor as part of the Security Skill Pool is to primarily support the Maritime Security Advisors in managing the maritime security support to Shell Trading and Supply businesses, ship managers and vessels on Shell charter.

Maritime Security supports Shipping and Trading in operating cost efficiently and securely by effective management of security risks; preventing harm to people, assets, and the environment (Goal Zero); enabling business value; and providing SME support to the organization when responding to maritime security incidents.

The incumbent’s primary role is to maintain an overview of all vessels (group managed, period charter, voyage charter and space charter) engaged on Shell business operating in their specific region. The incumbent is responsible for:

Ascertaining the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMP) compliance procedures and processes within their specific region to ensure company and industry policies, standards and initiatives for maritime security are complied with.


Supporting the Maritime Security Advisor in security risk assessments, investigations, case studies, due diligence reviews, Knowledge Management, information sharing and engagement with stakeholders as and when required.

Accountabilities:

Day-to-day management of the Maritime Security ‘To-Do-List’ in the Global Maritime Assurance System (GMAS), which includes vetting the security clearances of all vessels engaged on or proposed for Shell business transiting or operating in designated Maritime Security Zones. Ensuring the necessary mitigations are in place and conducting onboard security management reviews and providing security advice when required.


Support the Maritime Security Advisor that appropriate risk mitigation measures are in place to reduce Shell’s exposure to maritime security risks to ‘As Low As Reasonably Practicable’ (ALARP) and that fit-for-purpose maritime security policies, plans and procedures are implemented.


Support the Maritime Security Advisor that maritime security activities are complying with international laws, Shell General Business Principles (SGBP), the Shell Group Security Standard (GSS) and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights in the Extractive Sector (VPSHR).


Oversight and initiation of BMP compliance inspections and appointment of Maritime inspectors to conduct the inspection. Quality assurance of security inspection reports submitted by the assigned inspector. Constantly review existing vessel security clearances to improve efficiency of inspections and effectiveness of vessel security clearance process.


Provide SME advice, articulate maritime security threats and risks and fit-for-purpose vessel security measures to Technical Managers & Company Security Officers of chartered vessels that transit the Maritime Security Zones. Manage and deliver the relevant security information to vessels on Shell business, including the provision of intelligence update briefings to vessels prior to voyage departure.


Supporting the Maritime Security Advisor to manage and report maritime incidents, trends, and analysis to Corporate Security Managers in the relevant region and conduct maritime security-related investigations and reports when required.


Supporting the Maritime Security Advisor on the review and management of the security inspection protocols as and when necessary.


Conduct BMP compliance inspections for chartered vessels engaged on Shell group business when required to ensure their compliance with Industry and Maritime Security requirements.


Provide Maritime Security support to other regions when required.


Lead/support audits or due diligence of Private Maritime Security Companies.


Support Emergency Response activities as per Shell Incident Management System (SIMS).

What we need from you

The incumbent is expected to:

Have a broad understanding of established Maritime Security procedures, process and protocols and their best practice implementation.


Be a high calibre security professional with extensive experience in maritime security management.


Have a Navy or Amphibious special forces background.


Have working experience with a major Private Maritime Security Company in an operational role.


Robust understanding of, and solid experience with, BMP standards and their impact on the mitigation of threats against people, assets, and information.


Have knowledge of and ability to manage HSSE Risks effectively.

The incumbent must be able to:

Work independently with minimal supervision,

Be exceptionally self-motivated and driven,
Manage conflicting priorities, and,
Remain rational, composed, and professional at all times.
The incumbent must be a team player with developed interpersonal and strong communication (oral and written) skills to interface with other disciplines and external stakeholders. These include but not limited to:
Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook etc),
Fluency in English language, and able to report effectively verbally and in writing, and,
Additional languages will be an advantage.
