MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
UK Defence and Security Exports (DSE) is part of the Department for International Trade. We help the UK defence and security industries to export.

The British Embassy Seoul hosts a small, expert DSE team providing focused in-country advice and leading on all matters relating to the export of defence and security equipment and services. Our role requires extensive Government to Government co-ordination and relationship building as well maintaining strong links with both UK and Korean industry and in-depth knowledge of both Korean defence and security requirements and the UK offer.

We are supported by cadres of defence and security specialists who provide first hand advice on defence and security capabilities back in London, as well as working closely with Embassy colleagues, UK Ministry of Defence and other Government departments to secure the best possible opportunities for UK industry.

You will be crucial to our success: our support is a vital enabler and you will be central to ensure timely, effective delivery. Our goal is developing and maintaining relationships to increase coverage of the Korean defence and security market – requirements, acquisition budgets, programmes and competitor activity – and to represent the interests of UK with ROK government departments, military, other official bodies. Reporting to the First Secretary Defence and Security, the successful candidate will be expected to lead the team in running defence campaigns, promoting R&D partnerships, assisting inward and outward delegations, responding to UK Industry requests and reporting back to London.

This job is to cover the existing Senior Defence & Security Manager position in DSE team for 1 year.


ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Defence and Security Manger is a varied and stimulating position, while requirements can change quickly the key tasks involve:

1. Oversight and guidance: Build the team’s insight into defence and security opportunities, identifying and overcoming knowledge gaps. Provide tailored advice on exporting and industrial partnering, to UK companies in the defence and security sector, through knowledge of the ROK defence acquisition system and wider market understanding.

2. Strategic Relationship Management: Build trusted and impactful cross-Government, industry, military and broader eco-system networks. Particularly liaise with key stakeholders - including the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Agency for Defense Development, Korea Institute for Defense Development and ROK defence industry - to support UK companies doing business in Korea.

3). Campaigns, Visits & Events: Oversee and organise inward and outward visit programmes including high-level Government to Government events both in Korea and the UK such as Annual Joint Committee Meeting & Farnborough Airshow, working closely with colleagues in team, UK DSE, UK industry, DAPA, RoK Embassy in London and event organisers wherever appropriate.

4). Provide advice & collaborate: Advise and support the First Secretary Defence & Security (FSDS) and Embassy seniors on defence sector issues, leading on DSE priority tasks, or work streams as directed. Collaborate across the mission on wider defence engagement particularly with Defence Section, as well as relevant tech and innovation issues.

5). Play a wider role in the Embassy: You will be expected to play a leading role in supporting the wider Seoul DIT team and in the corporate functioning of the Embassy, including as a Crisis team member and through participation in one or more of our Embassy committees. This should aid both self-development and delivery of wider objectives.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience


LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Language: English and Korean
Level of language required: Fluent in spoken and written English and Korean

Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
Fluent in spoken and written English and Korean
Evidence of engaging with senior level business / government / military contacts
Knowledge and / or experience of the defence sector in government organisation or defence industries
Proven track record of success leading a team working flexibly and proactively, with wider stakeholders
Event and customer management skills
Be a flexible team player.
Strong IT literacy
