K-9 Handler , Afghanistan

The K9 Handler unit shall perform access control functions, sweeps and explosives detection at the UNAMA compounds. He/she shall actively support and uphold the Company's stated vision, mission and values

Essential Functions/Duties:Responsible for having all required equipment necessary to effectively perform all functions for the post, to include uniforms, weapons (for international handlers only who are weapons qualified), leash, choke chain/flat collar, reward, and kennel crate. UN will provide hand held radios for each K9 unit post to ensure integration with the UN Emergency Communication System (ECS)
Prior to posting, handler will ensure adequate water for himself and assigned canine
K9 handler will wear company provided uniform and UN ID cards at all time within the compound
K9 handler must have positive control of the canine at all times (on or off leash), and will have the canine on short leash whenever transitioning in and out of buildings
Upon assuming the post, the K9 unit will conduct a sweep of the area surrounding the K9 search area and avenues of approach to the entry control point
K9 teams will search pedestrians, vehicles, containers, cargo, luggage, and personal carried items entering UN premises for explosives
In coordination with UN Integrated Security, K9 teams will conduct random daily patrols of UN compounds, for the purpose of providing a deterrent effect and conducting searches
K9 unit will conduct systematic vehicle, truck, cargo and package searches at the designated ECP and inform UNAMA security of any positive detection of explosives
Conduct random patrols and exterior sweeping of buildings. Interior sweeping will be conducted per direction of UNAMA Security
Conduct open area, building, and warehouse searches, VIP support at the direction of UN Integrated Security Guard Force security officers
Conduct other searches as directed by UNAMA Security
Participate in the planning and execution of UN Compounds incident response exercises and drills
Handler is responsible to record the amount of vehicles, bags, cargo, searched during his/her shift
Coordinate and obtain approval of UNAMA Security prior to conducting any training within the UNAMA compound. Facilities used for training will have a minimum number of personnel in the immediate area
Review and be familiar with Janus and UNAMA Security SOPs and Contingency Plans
Other duties as directed



Job Requirements:


Must have a verifiable EDD Handler Certificate
Must have minimum of two years of previous K9 Handler experience in an active security environment
Must be of at least 26 years of age
Must have experience in daily maintenance training (i.e., performance and explosives detection) and experience in maintaining training records for assigned detection dogs
Must have experience in maintaining accurate records and training of contract canines
Must have experience in the day-to-day health and welfare of assigned detection dogs
Must have experience in all canine related equipment
Must have experience and knowledge in basic canine emergency first-aid as needed
Be physically fit and able to perform all general P/EDD duties, functions and activities
Ability to work in harsh working conditions, outdoors, and/or in extreme temperatures
Ability to work in a remote and potentially austere location for up to six months
Must be able to pass a physical approving candidate for work
Be free from all communicable diseases
Be well proportioned, as to height and weight
Be in good general health, without physical defects or abnormalities which would interfere with the performance of duties
Have binocular vision correctable through the use of glasses/contact lenses to 20/30
Have adequate color acuity
Capable of hearing normal conversation at three (3) meters with either ear, without the benefit of a hearing aid
Documented Basic First Aid and CPR training
Must possess valid taskera or passport
Must be able to pass and obtain a detailed background / security investigation
No felony or misdemeanor convictions
No terminations from any previous employment other than under honorable circumstances
Have citizenship verified and has no outstanding criminal record, including a written certification from the corresponding authority in their country of origin
Must be literate in English and Dari to the extent of reading and understanding printed regulations, detailed written orders, training instructions and materials. Must be able to communicate effectively in English
Must maintain personal appearance and uniform standards in accordance with contractual requirements and Janus policies
Maintain kennels as directed/required
Other duties as directed
