Due to the career progression of our current Head of Security, we have an exceptional opportunity for a capable and experienced security professional to fulfil this critical role at the University.

You will lead a team of over 50 to provide a 365 day, 24/7, security service for the University's operations across the Canterbury and Medway campuses. Our campuses are open to the public, with over 20,000 students, more than 6,000 staff and numerous visitors making daily use of our multiple buildings set within over 300 acres of land.

This role demands sound judgement to balance strategic thinking with daily operational accountability.

You will have substantial experience of managing operational security services within a medium to large organisation with a comparable risk profile. Your experience will be underpinned by education and training to degree level or equivalent, and sound skills in IT and budgetary/resource management.

You will have an awareness of the security issues relating to this sector and be able to show how your own skills and experience can offer an effective contribution.

You will be a credible leader, able to build effective working relationships with your own team and a wide range of stakeholders at all levels.

Above all, you will be driven to build on the developments we have already made and ensure our security services excel, and are responsive to current and future needs.



Estates Department
The Estates Department provides a number of essential services to the University of Kent and is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the extensive grounds and buildings; the security of students, staff and visitors; transport and travel; a postal service and the telephone exchange as well as the University Design & Print Centre. It is also responsible for the buildings, new development and construction projects both at Canterbury and at our Medway campus at Chatham Maritime and on the Chatham Historic Dock Yard.

Employee Benefits


The University offers a generous annual leave entitlement; for a full-time member of staff in this role it is 43 days per year. This is made up of 30 days contractual leave, 8 Public Holidays and 5 Customary Days taken when the University is closed at Christmas.

Upon appointment, subject to eligibility, a new recruit to this role will be able to join the USS pension scheme (further details at www.uss.co.uk).
Salary progression is by annual increments up to the maximum of the scale.
