Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


The UK Permanent Representation to the EU (UKREP) works within the EU and its member states to maximise British influence on issues such as trade, the single market and economic growth and is now looking for a highly motivated EU Counter-Terrorism & Security Desk Officer for the UK’s Permanent Representation.

The job holder will support the successful delivery of UK objectives on counter-terrorism and security, including in EU working groups and in particular by:
Seeking to ensure EU activity on CT and security issues (including legislative and non-legislative files)_ is effective and coherent, and reflects UK priorities on those issues;
Influencing EU and Member State actions across CT policy areas and contributing to development of the future UK-EU security relationship in particular on CT issues;
Supporting the UK’s Counter-Terrorism and Extremism Network (CTEN) on delivery of HMG’s Europe strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Support for the UK on Terrorism Working Party (TWP), Committee on Terrorism (External Aspects) (COTER) and Friends of Presidency group on Hybrid Threats;
Leadership of Terrorist and Criminal Finance portfolios; and Soft Targets Resilience work;
Engagement and liaison including within HMG and in particular with CTEN, as well as with future Presidencies, the new European Parliament CT Committee, institutional CT interlocutors and civil society on CT issues;
Support on CT-serious and organised crime nexus, including horizontal EU drug policy discussions and specific legislative files.
Essential qualifications and experience

University Degree;
Experience of working in the EU environment;
Fluency in English (both oral and written);
French language;
Ability to work effectively within a team;
Strong IT Skills, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel;
Willingness and ability to develop new systems & working practices;
Proven ability to prioritise and deliver results, meet competing deadlines and work efficiently to tight timescales;
Highly organised & have a keen attention to detail.
Desirable qualifications and experience

Knowledge of EU Justice and Home Affairs issues, in particular counter-terrorism/security.
