Security Advisor, Europe

The post, which will be based in our office in Dublin, will require frequent international travel to provide one-to-one security advice to human rights defenders and organisations working at high risk. This is a fixed term position for 12 months as part of a pilot project with the prospect of extension depending on effectiveness and funding.

We are an international NGO working to protect human rights defenders at risk (HRDs), people who work, non-violently, for any or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Every year, we provides protection grants to pay for the practical security needs of human rights defenders most at risk, carries out training's on security and protection and advocates on behalf of human rights defenders at risk.

The successful candidate will have:

At least five years professional security management experience. This could include a police or military role in international peacekeeping operations or a security management role for an international organisation.

Experience of leading risk assessment, threat assessment and the development and review of security plans. Knowledge of digital security issues an advantage.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships of trust with human rights defenders.
Experience of working successfully with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
An understanding and commitment to international human rights standards.
Fluent written and spoken English. The ability to speak one or more of Arabic, French, Russian or Spanish would be an advantage.


Key Tasks:
The Security Advisor will play a key role in developing and implementing a pilot project to provide one-to-one security advice to human rights defenders and organisations working at high risk.
– the development of a methodology and toolbox for providing consultation or one-to-one support
to HRDs with regard to managing their security and protection needs;
– undertaking field based security consultations with HRDs at risk;
– building the capacity of Front Line Defenders systems and staff in terms of security management;
