The Safety and Security Expert will ensure that mission safety and security issues are effectively addressed, thereby allowing project teams to focus on their work tackling the root causes of hunger in Nigeria. You will work closely with the Country Director, Field Coordinators and Logistics Coordinator on all aspects of the mission’s safety and security management.


Key activities in the role include
  • Collecting and analysing security information from a range of local and international sources, and representing ACF at security related meetings. Conducting risk and threat assessments whenever the context changes.
  • Working closely with the Field Coordinators to define and evaluate the security rules and  procedures for their projects and bases.
  • Developing contingency plans to minimise each risk identified for the mission.
  • Conducting safety and security briefings for all visitors and new staff when they arrive on mission.
  • Ensuring that copies of all security rules and procedures are kept updated and disseminated to all staff.
  • Coordinating and liaising on safety and security matters with all relevant actors such as national and international NGOs, UN, donor organisations and governmental authorities.

Person Specification
  • A seasoned humanitarian aid worker
  • A Bachelor’s degree in logistics, security management, humanitarian action, international relations or a related field.
  • 3 years’ experience managing team safety and security in volatile contexts, as well as practical training in leading the security function for humanitarian aid organisations.
  • Familiar with field-based communications systems like HF Codan, Motorola VHF, Thuraya, satellite and internet systems.
  • A very capable communicator
  • Enjoy working with strong, committed teams, including colleagues who do not speak your language fluently.
  • Enjoy the challenge of helping teams find ways to work where ACF’s activities will have the most impact.
  • Comfortable explaining complex policies and procedures simply, in non-technical terms.
  • An ability to succinctly summarise and analyse current field activities.
  • A work style that builds trust and calm within the team
  • Highly organised and paying attention to small details.
  • Able to handle highly stressful situations with composure and able to easily adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Able to build relationships with external actors while ensuring that ACF’s humanitarian principles and programme needs are clearly understood.
