If successful, you’ll be part of a dynamic and passionate team in Somalia and Nairobi that works together to improve the health,
nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene, and basic education of Somali girls and boys and protect them from violence, exploitation and abuse.
Purpose of the Post:
Under the direct supervision of the Field Security Officer (FSO) for NEZ Somalia, the Local Security Assistant will provide support in security related activities in Garowe.
Major duties and responsibilities:
· Monitor and review the security situation across North East Zone Somalia on an ongoing basis;
· Support the UNICEF FSO in liaising with local communities and other authorities and actors in the area of assignment;
· Ensure mission, staff and asset tracking on a permanent basis, and maintain an up-to-date situation report on staff movement at all times;
· Manage local security guards;
· Assist the UNICEF Field Security Officer (FSO) in safeguarding UNICEF operations, staff and assets;
· Prepare security risk assessments and reports on a regular basis or as required;
· Advise the FSO for Central and North East Zone Somalia on security related issues and developments that may concern UNICEF activities, staff and assets;
· Build and maintain information/contact networks throughout the area of assignment in order to enhance UNICEF’s field security capacity;
· Conduct regular field trips in order to enhance UNICEF’s field security capacity;
· Respond/assist in the response to emergencies/crises that may involve UNICEF operations, staff and assets;
· Assist in or conduct security & safety related investigations, including information collation and incident reporting;
· Assist field staff in requesting travel security clearances requests.
Qualifications, Experience and competencies
· Completion of secondary education.
· Six (6) years’ work experience, knowledge of security, safety procedures and methods. Previous UN experience would be beneficial.
· Ability to communicate effectively and with tact; to use fire-fighting and radio equipment; physical fitness; driver’s license. Good knowledge of computer applications like word processing and spreadsheets
· Fluency in English and Somali languages (written and oral) is required.
· Ability to organize and prioritize work and communicate with tact.
· Ability to work independently and accurately.
· Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.
