Security Protection Specialist – DRC

Position Description
Genderforce is looking to fill two (2) Security/Protection Specialist positions for the initial
pre-study of a project in the DRC.
  • The job is based in Goma, DRC with travel to field sites and the capital Kinshasa.
  • Start date: As soon as possible!
  • Contract length: Approx 4 months but extensions possible for the right candidate.
  • This position is unaccompanied and has no relocation support.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Evaluate threat situations for local partners/clients.
  • Assess current security measures in place and together with community representatives, develop a tentative security and protection plan for the follow-on work in the pilot phase.
  • Review and assess information relevant to the assigned protective operation to anticipate problems or incidents.
  • Conduct site surveys to assess factors affecting the protective environment of sites to be visited.

Primary Objectives
  • Ensure that any plan for the protection and prevention of SGBV is closely aligned to the needs and wants of the local community.
  • Validate (through approval by Project Manager) and ensure that any plan for protection and prevention of SGBV match the kinds of services that Genderforce/security sector partners deliver.
  • Assist and support Project Manager and Gender Advisor in providing all relevant and requested information for the OPLAN of the pilot project (as requested and required).

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This is a challenging role and the right candidate must be prepared to manage multiple relationships, demonstrate leadership qualities in leading a team into a conflict-zone, and work efficiently across a broad range of activities. We are small organisation and the successful candidate will need to be proactive and driven. This is also an exciting and diverse position with huge potential to drive the growth and development of an expanding and rewarding project.

Job Requirements
Required:
  • Documented experiences serving in the Special Forces and/or police operations in conflict and post-conflict areas.
  • Exceptional communication in both English and French and capacity to build and maintain relationships across fields and sectors (government, security, private security, NGOs and GOs). The successful candidate will need a strong emphasis on interpersonal skills including empathy, acceptance of difference, patience and flexibility.
  • Highly organised.
  • Familiar and comfortable implementing and carrying out OPLANs.
  • Maintain requisite level of skills in firearms and other protective equipment.
Desirable:
  • Experience working with/implementing UNSCRs on Women, Peace and Security, particularly 1325 and 1820.
  • Experience in working to improve the situation for women and girls in combating and preventing SGBV.
  • Proficient and IT skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
