Job DescriptionCorrections Advisors will provide a broad range of advice and technical assistance on correctional issues. Advisors not only provide technical assistance within the corrections facility but they also serve as an important resource to offer advice on any issues that may occur among the local corrections staff. In general, depending on the level of the position I-V, Corrections Advisors may be required to train, mentor and advise their international correctional counterparts through formal classroom instruction, hands-on mentoring and sharing with counterparts inside the correctional facility and advising counterparts at the facility level or headquarters level. Advisors will most likely interact with other international correctional entities, military counterparts, non-government organizations and the local governmental ministries. In many respects the corrections advisor will be viewed by the local national corrections staff, prisoners and citizens of the host country as an ambassador of the United States. Consequently everything the advisor does and says will be perceived in a positive or negative manner. As a result, especially in countries immersed in an
environment of war or post conflict, the actions of an advisor may cause lives to either be saved or lost.Under some circumstances, advisors may be required to become operational in actually managing the facility or correctional agency. However, in most cases this is the rare exception. Additionally, advisory positions may entail one or more of the following program areas: Training, Mentoring, Capacity Building, Infrastructure Management, Special Operations, and Assessments, to mention a few. Additionally, advisors may be assigned to assist in the development of the adult male and female correctional system and/or the juvenile justice system.
Duration long term, overseas assignments
RequirementsAt a minimum and dependent upon the advisory level of the position, all corrections advisors shall have a combined total of eight years work experience with at least five years experience in their relevant field (i.e., correctional service) including one or more of the following skills sets: Prison operations, Probation and parole systems, Corrections administration and human resources, Corrections training, Security threat groups, Correctional facilities management, Classification and records, Prisoner programs, Prisoner transportation, Emergency response, Strategic planning, Corrections logistics, Correctional medical services, and Community corrections.Advisors must have graduated from federal or state-certified corrections, probation/parole academy of at least 120 hours in length or equivalent with the U.S. Military corrections. Advisors must hold current certifications in first aid, less-than-lethal systems, and chemical agents.
Required Skills
Level V Corrections Advisors must demonstrate twelve years of progressively responsible experience in corrections, four years of which must have been in senior-level management and supervision (regional director or its equivalent), visionary skills and ability to form strong partnerships in a diverse culture.
Level V Corrections Advisors must have at least two years experience in senior level positions (Level IV equivalent) on international corrections assistance missions.
Level V Corrections Advisors shall also have one of the following: a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/law enforcement, a social science, business, accounting, or engineering or related field; an advanced degree; or law enforcement command training.
Responsibilities
Level V Corrections Advisors serve as senior-most leaders for large and/or complex missions, serving at the senior executive level. Level V Corrections Advisors set overall mission direction, working closely with INL. They liaise regularly with USG, senior host government, and international actors.
