Description
Job Summary

The Armorer plans, directs, and supervises firearms qualifications, instructing users in the proper and safe handling of firearms. Inspects, tests, and modifies as required weapons to ensure compliance with federal and state rules and regulations regarding weapon specifications.
Principle Accountabilities
Maintains, repairs, inspects, and tests handguns, rifles, and shotguns authorized for use by the department’s sworn staff.
Maintains a complete and accurate inventory of the Contract’s weapons.
Inspects, tests, and modifies as required weapons to ensure compliance with federal and state rules and regulations regarding weapon specifications.
Administers written and shooting proficiency tests to applicants for permits to carry concealed weapons.
Acts as a liaison between weapon manufacturers and the department regarding the maintenance and repair of weapons.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
Advanced knowledge of and ability to perform skilled maintenance, repair and testing on a wide variety of handguns, rifle, shotguns and reloading equipment.
Knowledge of safe and proper handling and discharge of firearms.
Working knowledge of State, Federal, and department codes, rules, and regulations regarding firearm specifications.
Advanced knowledge of Firearm sighting and marksmanship techniques; basic characteristics of handgun and shotgun ammunition.
Knowledge of methods of instructing others in the proficient use of firearms, and developing related training materials.
English language, report writing, record keeping and basic arithmetic.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and perform basic arithmetic computations;
Ability to record and maintain departmental reports and inventory records.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with department staff, vendors, other jurisdictions and the public.
Experience & Education
Six years of professional experience; or 4 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Ability to lift 50 lbs. May be scheduled to work rotating shifts.
