Regional Security Advisor - Africa

Washington, DC

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Security Adviser Team Leader and under
direction of the Chief, International Security section, the Regional Security Advisor
(RSA) plans and carries out the Client’s field security operations in Africa.


Primary functions include monitoring the security situation in assigned countries; conducting
security risk assessments; providing briefings to Client personnel; assisting in the
development of international security policies; coordinating emergency responses;
drafting security and safety guidance for management, Executive Directors, Client staff,
technical experts, and other Client employees traveling on mission or assigned to
overseas locations; advising as to how best to protect Client information and physical
assets at overseas locations.


Tasks and responsibilities
Collect, collate and analyze security threat information.
Provide timely situation assessments and recommendations for action during
security incidents affecting the Client.
Conduct Country Security Risk assessments in assigned region to determine risk
levels for Client personnel and operations.
Prepare daily and weekly security reports covering significant security-related incidents and provide analysis of how each event impacts the overall safety and security of Client personnel and operations.
Prepare and deliver security briefings for Client missions travelling to high-risk destinations.
Prepare Security Communiqués to update Client personnel on major security developments and their potential impact on Client operations.
Provide regular updates on recent security developments in high- risk locations in the assigned region.
Establish productive liaison with security departments at the UN, the World Bank, diplomatic missions and vendor security information providers.
Establish and sustain close working relationships with Client managers and fieldbased
Client personnel to exchange security information and provide advice.
Provide security advice and assistance to other regions as necessary and undertake other tasks as assigned.


Knowledge and  experience

Essential
Bachelor’s degree required;
At least three years’ work experience directly related to Africa.
At least three years’ work experience in security roles.
Demonstrated knowledge of security analysis and risk assessments or physical
security or security operations and planning.

Preferred
Master’s or equivalent advanced degree;
Previous work experience in a security role in the UN system.
Experience in creating and managing electronic databases.

Qualifications and specialist  skills

Superior spoken and written communications; candidate must be comfortable
speaking in front of large audiences.
A strong customer service focus and ability to build and maintain trusting client
relationships in a multicultural environment.
Work productively in a small team environment as well as individually.
Must be comfortable in operating in a high stress environment requiring short
deadlines and be able to provide reasoned and immediate advice and assistance
during emergencies with little or no supervision.
Availability to work on emergency situations during off- hours; if necessary, for an
extended period of time.
Fluency or advanced French a plus
