Appointments against these posts are on a local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station. The post is subject to funding availability.

Internal and external candidates with the required qualifications must pass the written entrance test for United Nations security and safety staff. An invitation to sit the test will be sent by e-mail to candidates with the required qualifications.

Candidates will have to pass a written and practical qualification on weapon(s) used by UN Security Officers within the first 6 months of employment. In case candidate does not pass the written test and practical qualification on weapons, please note that the contract will not be extended.

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General, who may assign them to any task or function in the organization. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions during their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Physical condition: Must be in excellent physical and mental shape. Candidates must pass a medical exam that includes a psychological test.Weapons handling: Candidates must pass a written and practical test in handling the firearms used by United Nations security officers within six months of being hired. If the candidate fails this test, his/her contract will not be renewed.

These 4 posts are located in the Security and Safety Service of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Descriptions Duties
Under the supervision of the Head of the Canine Unit, or the Sergeant of Unit during the Head's absence, the incumbent:

- Participates in explosives detection preventive checks of conference rooms and offices in particular when used for high-level meetings and participates in room searches in the context
of special events organized at UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Provides relevant technical support to preventive security checks of delegates, NGO's, visitors and any others entering, or already on, the premises of UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Participates in preventive security checks of privately owned vehicles entering, or already on, the premises of UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Participates in preventive security checks of delivery vehicles entering, or already on, the premises of UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Participates in preventive checks of garage spaces and parking area of UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Assists security checks on abandoned or suspicious objects discovered on UNOG premises, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Assists security checks of the mail or others deliveries entering UNOG, its annexes as well as UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs on their request;
- Assists in scheduling regular trainings to maintain canine detection skills and seconds the Head and Sergeant of Unit in supervising training sessions of other canine teams;
- Participates in the training of Security Officers on explosive and weapon's detection;
- The incumbent will also be required to perform other tasks such as reinforcing other operational teams of the Security and Safety Section, especially the Units of the Specialized Intervention Group in accomplishing their duties.
- May participate on missions abroad with or without his/her dog. May be required to work nights, weekends, UN holidays and irregular shift hours.
- May be required to work extended duty shifts or to come to work beyond regular duty shifts in case of service related needs.
- The incumbent must ensure the custody, control and care of the dog he/she is in charge at home, outside of working hours.

Completion of secondary school or its equivalent commercial school. Additional security or military training is required. Must have passed the UN Security Test. Completed diploma for Canine handlers is an asset. Official permit for the storage and the use of explosives is an asset.

Work Experience

At least three (3) years of experience in the field of security, of which at least two (2) years in the field of specialized canine searches and detection, including the training of dogs.
Experience in international deployment as a Canine Explosives Detection Officer is an asset.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English or French and knowledge of the other one is required.Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
