Regional Analyst , Syria


Location: Syria
Closing date: 11 Mar 2016 
(starting date ideally 20 April 2016).

Terms & Conditions: 12 month contract (renewable depending on donor funding), €4.500 per month salary, 4 days annual leave per month, comprehensive health and AD&D insurance. The Regional Analyst will be based in Amman and regularly travel between INSO Syria office (Gaziantep, Turkey) and other INSO offices in the region.


The position will combine representation tasks, with research and production of thematic analytical reports on access, regional political issues, and security as per INSO’s, and INSO’s partner’s needs.

Successful candidates will have strong humanitarian background, experience of the country context, and will be mature and outgoing individuals.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Represent INSO analyses on context, conflict trends, political and social developments, and shifts in humanitarian needs to the wider regional NGO community.
Attend relevant coordination fora (SIRF, Whole of Syria...) and liaise with stakeholders (UN, INGOs and Syrian and Iraqi NGOs, donors, researchers...) and provide partners with contextual briefings and facilitate discussions.
Create and maintain a solid network, amongst others with Regional NGO offices and UN agencies, analytical institutions, think tanks, universities and regionally based CDs and donors, to obtain credible and relevant context and conflict information and to keep abreast of developments within said organisations.
Participate in the NGO community security roundtables in Amman, and where possible in Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, and contribute with a regional view where appropriate.
Produce regular contributions for INSO scheduled reports (bi-weekly and quarterly reports), with a focus on regional and international dynamics influencing the conflict.
Produce regular thematic analytical reports on specific political and conflict dynamics which can have implication on humanitarian action, such as context shifts, conflict actor analysis or changes in NGO access, with objective to support operational and strategic programming.
Facilitate and catalyse collaboration and information sharing between the Syria and Iraq programmes.
Effectively represent, promote and protect INSO's mandate of independence, impartiality and neutrality, and actively promote INSO as a key member of the humanitarian community.

Mandatory Requirements:

Fluent in English (written and spoken). Minimum 4 years’ experience from working as a political/security/conflict analyst, with a mandatory MENA experience. Minimum 1 recent year professional experience of the Syria crisis - ideally in an analytical or operational role. Master’s Degree in relevant field of study – Political Science, Development Studies, Arab Studies, International Relations – mandatory. A demonstrable understanding of security and political dynamics. Proven writing and analytical abilities (sample requested). Demonstrable understanding of humanitarian coordination mechanisms, safety practices and security dynamics. Capacity and confidence to work independently under the guidance of the INSO Syria team in Gaziantep and Beirut and supervision of the Director.

Preferred Characteristics:
Experience with NGO security and/or project management.
Existing information networks in Jordan and/or the region.
Arabic language skills (written and spoken).
Experience in staff capacity development and training.
Diplomatic and mature personality. Be proactive, outgoing and a confident communicator.
Proven capacity to build networks.
