The job we’re offering is part of the unit’s recent extension of support to the field. While we have already identified some new colleagues we are still looking to fully completing the team.

Under the guidance of the Director of Operations, the Security and Crisis Management Support unit (SCMS) develops the International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) security and crisis management policy, advises and trains field and headquarters operations managers and facilitates the ICRC’s crisis response.

Purpose of the post
The Security Risk Management Advisor (SRMA) is a member of the Security and Crisis Management Unit. As an advisor, they support (coaching, training, monitoring) the risk owners in the field in assuming their responsibility in managing security and safety risks. They contribute to HQ’s monitoring of the effectiveness of the security and safety risk management in the field. They may be requested to be a (short term) member of or advisor to a field Incident Management Team.

Your task
Security and Safety Risk Management
Advise field risk manager(s) on relevance, coherence, scope and depth of their risk assessment
Contribute with expert knowledge to risk identification, risk analysis, the definition of mitigating measures and the establishment of an effective risk monitoring plan
Monitor reporting, analysis and follow-up of security and safety incidents (coherence, relevance, scope and depth)
Monitor staffing, coherence, relevance, scope and depth of the security and safety risk management in delegations
Crisis Management
Advise on setting up crisis management structure in the field (staffing, procedures, tools and infrastructure)
Be ready for rapid deployments to support any field structure when needed
Capacity Building
Co-facilitate Security and Crisis Management courses (preparation, execution, evaluation)
Undertake risk assessment evaluation and/or training to operational partners (e.g.
National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) regarding security and safety management
Advise on the tasking and selection of resident staff with security and safety risk management functions and contribute to building their capacity
Organise, conduct and evaluate the training module for field crisis management teams
Reporting lines

The SRMA reports to the SCMS unit at ICRC HQ in Geneva.
Selection Requirements
Formal training and/or confirmed experience in any of: risk management, security or crisis management, coaching/advising
A minimum of 5 years in positions of managing teams
Strong skills in organising, analysing and summarising
Results oriented with good communicating and networking skills
Previous experience in delivering training
Ability and willingness to travel extensively
English very good oral and written; other languages an asset (e.g. Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish)
Your profile
Experience in security and safety management a strong advantage
Confident and conscientious in advising and coaching or training others to develop their security and crisis management competences;
Interested in improving the ICRC’s security and safety management practices and monitoring its implementation in the field;
Skilled in analysing and summarising;
A recognised manager with a proven ability to organise yourself;
Willing and able to travel extensively and flexibly to field structures

Length: 2 years (renewable)

Starting date: January 2016
