About Peace Corps in Uganda

Peace Corps is an international autonomous agency of the US Government with operations in over 65 countries. It operates in Uganda by the invitation of the Government of Uganda. Peace Corps Uganda has memoranda of understanding with government ministries that outline broad areas of agreement of cooperation regarding the work of Peace Corps Volunteers in Uganda. Volunteers are signed to government and non-government agencies and organizations, community based organizations, universities, colleges and schools who partner to enable Volunteers to provide capacity building in Literacy Education, Health, Agriculture and Medical and Nursing Education; also aims to build cultural understanding between Americans and Ugandans.

Qualifications and Experience 
The SSA must at a minimum possess the following skills and abilities to effectively carry out the duties of the position: 
A secondary school diploma (or local equivalent); college degree preferred. 
Preferred - At least 3 years’ experience working with Americans or other expatriate development organizations in Uganda. 
Must be able to obtain security clearance with the US Embassy; 
Position requires person who is a good listener, and is able to withhold judgment. 
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other organizations, including local law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management and other NGO/development agencies; 
Ability to analyze crime trends and other risks and propose mitigation strategies; 
Demonstrated organizational and communication skills; 
Ability to speak, read, and write in English (Level III) is required; 
Familiarity with at least one other national language of Uganda in addition to English; 
Ability to work with Microsoft Office Suite, and other basic computer knowledge; 4 
Ability to conduct training and give presentations, in both English and a local language; 
Experience working in a cross-cultural office setting, preferably with an American or European organization; 
Self-starter capable of independent work, while also appreciative and skillful in a team setting. 

Position Elements 
Supervision Received: Supervised by the Safety & Security Manager. 
Available Guidelines: 
1) Peace Corps Manual, 
2) Foreign Affairs Manual 
3) instructions provided by the Programming and Training Officer and the Country Director. 

Exercise of Judgment: Broad exercise of judgment within the confines of job responsibilities. 

Limits of Authority: The Assistant is expected to research, discuss, and suggest solutions within the confines of the job responsibilities. 

Nature, Level and Purpose of Contacts: Works closely with the Director of Programming and Training, Director of Management Operations, members of the Programming and Training Team, the administrative Team. 
Communicates at all levels as required by the job responsibilities.
